BARBARA YOUNG MEMORIAL AWARD HOME ECONOMICS/CONSUMER STUDIES

Barbara E Young (nee Smith) – affectionately known as “Ma” Young – was born on 10 December 1922. She joined the staff of Sir John Adamson High School as a Home Economics teacher in 1954 while the school was still located in Turffontein. Her family’s involvement with Sir John commenced in 1908 when her father was admitted to the junior ranks of the Turffontein School. In 1919, her father returned to the school (Turffontein Intermediate) as a Manual Training teacher and her mother taught there in 1920. He met Edith Hinds, a Domestic Science teacher on the staff of the school, and married her in 1920. Robyn-Ann, Barbara’s daughter, also taught at the school for a short period of time. When she retired in 1982, Barbara Young had rendered thirty-two years of service to education, twenty-eight years at this school. She passed away peacefully in 1987 and her husband made a cash grant to the school to institute the Barbara Young Memorial Award in her memory.
